Statement of intent
My chosen theme for my GCSE third photography project is Framing. I have chosen to study this theme as I believe it allows me to explore and specialise the skills that I have learnt throughout the photography course and will allow me to be creative.
In order to produce a successful, creative and unique final piece I intend to carry out a variety of research on my chosen theme of framing. I will research and interpret a variety of artists and photographs, such as the work of Irving Penn. I will also show my knowledge of this theme by visiting exhibitions and museums, such as the Manchester City Art Gallery, as well as going on location shoots in Manchester and my surrounding area of Stretford.
I hope to explore all options in terms of media which will allow me to have a successful project and will influence my ideas. I will try to use film, as well as photography, to broaden my outcomes. I intend to capture a variety of photoshoots to explore my chosen theme of Framing. I will involve myself in a number of photoshoots, both inside and outside of the school environment to progress my ideas, capturing specific photoshoots influenced by certain artists but also taking broader photoshoots to indulge in creativity. I hope to include a variety of photographic genres into my work also e.g. photojournalism (ideals),Framing and still life.
I will also go outside of school on location shoots and take a range of photos to improve my framing project as this will give me a greater variety of images that I can refine and manipulate in photoshop. I will really enjoy doing this because taking photographs is something that I do outside of school, for example, I sometimes take a range of images for my family.
Throughout this project, I will use a variety of techniques with the camera and photoshop to help my chosen theme. I will explore both manual and automatic techniques on the camera - helping to portray the themes of flaws and perfection through focused and blurred work. I will also use a variety of ISO apertures and shutter speeds to emphasise certain features within the photographs. I may also experiment with the lights and the black background, in order to manually manipulate the photographs to comply with each theme. I will also use digital techniques, such as on photoshop CC and Bridge to edit photographs I have taken.
In doing this project, I hope to learn more about the theme 'Framing' and carry out extensive research on a variety of particular artists and photographers. I also hope to specialise and finalise the skills I have learnt throughout the GCSE level photography course and successfully implement them into my final piece.
I see my final format as being a spread of three to five photographs, taken from my best photoshoot within this project. I will aim to corporate the theme 'Framing' not only into the context of each photograph portrayed in my final piece but also in the appearance and presentation.

Research on Bob Martin
Context
Bob Martin is a multi-award-winning sports photographer, who specializes in shooting action pictures for advertising, corporate, and editorial clients. Martin has photographed major sporting events worldwide, from the last fourteen summer and winter Olympic Games, to elephant polo and horse racing on ice. His work has taken him to the farthest corners of the globe.

Composition
Bob Martin tends to use quite a few techniques in his photography including Place points of interest on intersections, he used manual focus so we could get a full detail on the player. He used natural lines that would attract the eye into the picture, Fill the Frame, Centre Dominant Eye. He used a Sony Alpha 7r which he always calls the best experience he has had with a camera. He decided to take photos in the Paralympics and really show how difficult and hard sports can be.. I love how he has done tight crops on the water splashes and the face. It really makes it stand out and appealing. This way we can really see the different textures present. He has used the sweet spot for the man's face. He is trying to show various things throughout the photo. Bob Martin has used natural light and an ISO of around 600 for that perfect lighting. This is so that we get that balanced effect of the textures present which are reflecting off the light and also giving a really clean look to the water splashes. We can't really see much middle ground or distance and what this shows is how powerful it had made the photo with this nice tight crop to outstand the patterns of the photo. Bob has used in my opinion a F-stop 11 or 14 and a lens pf 50m also a shutter speed which looks to be fast because he has captured the splashes mid air which is not easy or maybe not even possible with a low shutter speed.
Connection
Bob really tends to use sports to show the struggles of a player. In some photos we can see the pain for victory however in some we see the joy of getting the win. He quoted "I try to make my images as graphic as I can. It's every sports photographer's job to capture the right moments, but you still need to be conscious of composition. I think that is the one of the things that helps my work to stand out - I try to combine getting the right moment with making a really graphic image". He tries to tell us that any moment captured can be special and it should be kept. I would like to use Bob's camera skills for my work. Especially because I'm doing framing I need to make sure that I get the best focus of the objects and main person or landmark. I will not be following the theme of sports however the techniques I can relate to.
Comment
The reason I like Bob Martin's work is because it really has a special meaning behind it. He tries to show through photos the emotions of people when playing sports. For example a really outstanding photo taken by him was when he took the photo below of someone jumping and we could see the outer layer of the stadium. It was a really good way of framing. Overall the reason I have chosen Bob Martin as one of my chosen photographers is because of his wide use of camera and editing skills. I would love to use for my own final project.

Framing Homework
My first homework for framing, I am really pleased with the outcomes as they capture a good sense of 'Framing'
I have chosen to take these set of images because in my opinion they really stand out. The photos are meaningful and powerful because I really enjoy taking framing photographs.
Shoot plan
My theme I am starting with is Framing which is really personal and meaningful to me because I am going to be professional and bring in my own props, for example a mirror and my own glasses which would really help me in my project.
Frames can be made from a variety of props and forms, and photographers often use branches, arches, windows or even people to make a frame. Famous photographers often used framing to achieve a variety of effects. This will improve my framing project.
I will need to use a tripod, background, reflectors, and a background stand and most importantly studio lights and a camera. The camera I will be using is a canon DSLR and a standard lens.
For my first shoot I will probably take an indoor shoot and ask my teacher to try and bring some equipment in such as lights and if she cant bring a mirror I will bring one from home. The first photography shoot for framing will most likely be done during lesson. The shoot can either be light or dark, but preferably I would want it to be light because it makes the image stand out. I will also need to take a couple of independent shoots. For example if I go out and see a board that says welcome to Manchester I will try get the person who is with me to make a love heart sign with there hands and have Welcome to Manchester will be the background.
The camera I will use is my own phone camera and in school I will use the cannon camera.
For my third shoot I am hoping to go out on a trip with my school year 11 class. When I go out on a trip with school I will try and take a range of images for my theme. For example I would like to take round 100-150 photographs for my project. This will then help me build up my project to the highest level possible and reach the highest grade I could possibly get . The one place with school I would really like to go to is Town, because I will then be able to explore and identify a lot of things such as objects.

My First Shoot
This is my first set of images that I had taken and as you can clearly see they were not as successful as I would like them to be. They was not rightly framed. They had a good black background but then I didn't take the image correctly because you could still see the tables, chairs and lights I had put on. To take a better set of images I would have to get closer and make sure I have got only the black background in the photograph also make sure I get the whole frame as well.
My second shoot
Third shoot: Location trip into Manchester
When I was on the way to the Train Station I thought it would be fantastic to take these outstanding images.
The same, but for these set of images I thought I should frame the gate whilst doing it. This was the reason these images were slightly better.
I had taken these images so I could frame the metal fence.
For these set of images I had framed the Manchester sign. So the Manchester sign can stand out.
When I got on the Tram. I had thought this would be a great idea to take an image through the window. I tried taking an image of the tracks through the window of the Tram but it didn't quite work out in my favour.
These images really stand out because I got the correct timing and the rule of thirds really does stand out in these images because I have framed the round shape of the track to the right hand side you can see the window.
While I was on the tram I took a set of Images that was linked to framing. These images really stand out because the photos are being framed through the metal holders.
When I got of the Tram I thought it would be a good idea to Frame the Tram moving away. I had used the railing to frame the Tram moving away. This then made the photographical image stand out.
These are just images of normal Framing.

Evaluation
Although I did not like the theme, I can see that I was able to photograph different things. I did prefer the texture project but on the other hand this project allowed me to be more creative. This also made me improve my knowledge and my skills as I had to watch more tutorials and learnt how to manipulate images in Photoshop. I found the use of Photoshop very useful and learnt how to layer images and be more creative.
I really enjoyed taking photos because we were able to go out on location into Manchester where I was able to really explore the theme of framing. This shoot made me explore the manual settings on my camera as I had to keep adjusting it depending on the natural light. I used the exposure meter as well as aperture and shutter spread. When out on location I could see a lot of framing opportunities and I am really pleased with my final galleries.
I used YouTube tutorials which made my outcomes come to a whole entire different level. I have learnt how to copy and paste layers and use the blur tool in Photoshop. For my next project I would like to learn even more about Photoshop.
The photographer I researched and used for inspiration was Rob Martin and for my location shoot I linked my ideas to his, for example, I also tried the black and white setting on the camera and tried to create a focal point of interest. When I was doing my Photoshop I was watching YouTube tutorials to make my outcomes look similar to my research but also to stretch my own creativity.
The most successful part of my project was the going out on location and finding framing opportunities around me. This also made my work more meaningful as it relates to the place where I am from, I have been able to 'Frame' my own city and be creative with the outcomes.
I also used more websites such as coggle to plan a shoot which was extremely helpful. The pandemic has caused some delays but I've still been able to complete the shoot. Lock down really made everything slower but one thing I came out with is me being confident from working from home which makes me extremely independent. I learnt from watching the tutorials and from my peers which was extremely helpful because some of the techniques are hard to follow. All of this was a great experience because I am now able to do a lot of things by myself which makes it professional.
