Statement Of Intent
My objective for this Portrait project is to create a set of images that stands out by the unique methods I will be using based around professional photographers such as Magdiel Lopez. At the end of my project I will choose my best photos to go into a gallery and explain my journey and the way how I achieved this final goal.
My initial research was finding a photographer as an inspiration starting point for this topic, they will have need to be creative . My Aim in this project is to successfully create a series of images that represent the different methods I will use that are based around photographers such as Magdiel Lopez. At the end of the project I will pick my best images to go into a series and also display my worst image and the process to get to the best image.
My initial research was finding a main inspiration for my portraits and a photographer that is creative and will support me in achieving a high level as I am passionate about photography and would like to achieve the best grade possible. Therefore I will pick a challenge as inspiration so that I strive to achieve it and push myself. I have specifically chosen Magdiel Lopez as her portraits are lively and filled with colour and slightly difficult to achieve, therefore it will leave me with a struggle and challenge so I can have a further in-depth understanding of my journey and how my final outcomes got to such a place. I will also research Steve McCurry as I like the way he uses contrasting colours in his images to draw you in. As a contrast, I will also look at the work of Diana Arbus whose work is mainly black and white, this will offer up an alternative way of working, which I might use.
I chose my themes of Portrait to show what I am capable of and to use methods that I might not use if it wasn't for this project, which could further deepen my knowledge and understanding in photography. I will start by taking sets of images that I can then manipulate in Photoshop, using inspiration and ideas based on my research. I will show my progress and journey by portraying how I took each image and the process it took to get to that stage including the use of my photoshop and photo manipulation. These will be shown in chronological order for better understanding and a clearer journey. I will experiment by using a variety of different settings on the cameras given by changing white balance, ISO, composition and aperture on the settings menu which can change my outcomes and final images.
I would like to use a wide range of techniques so I know that I have improved my abilities. I have a manual DSLR canon camera which I will take studio shots with as well as out on location. In many situations I have had the opportunity to use a telescopic lens which has been a blast to use and I also hope to use a 50m lens. I will try to push myself to be a lot more creative on photoshop to improve my photos, I will try to learn how to layer images and how to blur the background of some images.
I have three months to construct my work towards my final piece. I aim to complete my initial research within the third week and start photographing by the fourth week in order to give me the time I need to show my progression in my work. I will then develop my work in photoshop and capture some more images when I next go outside. I will constantly monitor and improve my outcomes as i go along and make sure that my work goes on a journey.
When I have completed the project, I will select my best photography outcomes and display them in my final gallery with my evaluation at the end too.

Research on Magdiel Lopez
Context:
Having researched on the internet, I found the following information: ‘Magdiel Lopez was born in Havana, Cuba. His childhood was spent around the colourful culture of Cuba. This played a big part in his career and is the reason why Lopez uses very vibrant, decorative styles throughout his work. Lopez moved to the states at age 15 and continued to work on his art for the next 10 years. He decided to finally showcase his work on the app Instagram. He created a series called 'A Poster a Day' in which he released a poster a day for a whole year on said app. As the days went by, he increasingly gained attention from very popular news outlets such as New York Times and Cosmopolitan as well as big global audiences such as Entrepreneur and Awards. Since his gain in popularity he has worked with several influential brands such as Nike, MTV, Apple, Warner Brothers, etc.”

Composition:
The image above shows a clear leading line across the middle of the image which accentuates the separate colours shown and adds symmetry and composition to the image. There is also a strong leading line down the middle of the image, created by the mask, the sun and the lines of the mountain, which gives the image a very graphic feel. I can see that the Rule of thirds is shown as the top of the face is higher above in the top half of the image whilst the rest of the face is placed at the bottom half. This technique makes the viewer focus on the floating mask The clouds are located around the sweet spot of the composition grid which makes the object very pleasant to the eye. In my opinion, I think that when the photo was taken they used a fast shutter speed to capture the essence of the image and make it very clear to the eye. The image was most likely taken as a studio shot and lit carefully from the front as we can see highlights on the side of the face.
Photoshop tools and techniques have been heavily used to develop this image into a poster, I think they may have used tools such as softening the harsh lines around the face and making the colours pop using saturation and blocks colour tools. This outcome will definitely inspire me to work in this style and I will watch a tutorial to help me with the Photoshop tools and techniques.
Connection:
This image links with our portrait project because it involves taking a picture of a person's face and adding your own uniqueness to the portrait to make it more captivating for your audience. It requires you to upgrade an already good picture by using photoshop to make the picture more impressive to the examiners that will be grading our work. I used similar colours in my work in the sense that my pictures and this picture include more pastel, brighter colours just like my own work did. Despite that I did also use darker colours so my work could have a contrast of dark to light colours which would show the examiner a span of different colours but not too many to the point where it becomes distracting and confusing. I also did use similar photoshop by splitting the face into separate parts which is what I did but instead using a different Magdiel Lopez poster as a guide. In my opinion I really adore Lopez' work as it is something that I am into and intrigued by. I really like how he uses very dramatic, wacky features in his pieces of work such as bright colours and distinctive photoshop skills to undeniably add personality and flare into his work.
Comment:
I like his work because it looks very unique and is bright . it makes you think of positive things because of the different contrasts of colours. When I first saw this image I thought the use of vibrant colours was really effective as I instantly wanted to look at it. Furthermore, I also really liked the unique style the artist has and how he shows a story through his work. I will link to Lopez's work because I will take pictures of bright objects and edit them. I am also beginning to look at portraits.

Research on Steve McCurry
Context: I have been researching Diane Arbus and found this information on the internet:
Steve McCurry (born 1950) is best known for his evocative colour photographs that document both human struggles and joy. Having travelled the globe for over thirty years, McCurry has photographed warzones, burning oil fields, refugee camps, ship breaking yards and monsoons all over the world. He brought the world the first images of the conflict in Afghanistan, including his celebrated image of the Afghan Girl, Sharbat Gula, that has become one of the world's most iconic photographs. His work spans conflicts, vanishing cultures, ancient traditions and contemporary culture.
Composition:
When looking at this image by Steve McCurry I can see that he has utilised a few procedures in his work, such as the Rule of Thirds. When you look at this image you can see that the girl's right eye is on the right hand side and in the sweet spot that makes you look and focus on this point. This technique also helps to draw out the impact of her expression which has an emotional effect on the viewer. McCurry uses driving lines to lead the eye into the picture, Inclining, surrounding the figure with a scarf that helps to frame the girl's face. The contrast of the red and green also act as a framing technique and the tight cropping draws the viewer into the photography. We are able to see a difference of ruddy against green and this is often truly curiously as its inverse on the colour wheel. This way the colours are truly standing out. MuCury uses a Nikon D810, which he has called the leading sort of camera he has ever owned. I think he may have used a 50m lens as the face is in Sharpe focus but the background is blurry, this softens the image and supports the composition. I am not sure if he used a tripod but I get the impression that the camera is hand held. I think that the Fstop may have been 11 0r 14 and ISO 100 and the shot taken outside, rather than a set-up studio shot. Steve McCurry has utilised an extremely soft light so that we get that adjusted impact of the girl's eyes reflecting the light additionally giving a delicate smooth see to her confrontation. . We can't really see much center ground but the tight edit to outstand the young ladies eyes.
Connection:
The essential soul peeking out, experience etched on a person's face. This inspires me to take photos of unique things like warzones showing how people suffer throughout. It's amazing how he has thought of such an idea it makes it so appealing to the eye. I would like to do the same using a canon camera to take photos of something that's related to Steve Mc Curry photography. I will follow the theme of disturbing and compelling. I like the way the frames have been shot and cut out for that sweet touch to the photos. This inspires me to take photos of unique things like warzones showing how people suffer throughout. It's amazing how he has thought of such an idea it makes it so appealing to the eye. Comment:
I like Steve Mc Curry's work as it's got a special meaning to it. It shows the world what people go through but through pictures and not videos. Broke homes scars and blood; It shows it all. A very good picture was taken by him in Pakistan of a girl with bright green eyes this was a very famous shot it showed the sadness in they girls eyes. You could see tears in her eyes showing it was an unfortunate event that had occurred . I love how Mc Curry took risks to show the world what underdeveloped countries are having to go through.

Research on Diane Arbus
Context: I have been researching Diane Arbus and found this information on the internet.
Diane Arbus (1923–1971) is one of the most original and influential photographers of the twentieth century. She studied photography with Berenice Abbott, Alexey Brodovitch, and Lisette Model and had her first published photographs appear in Esquire in 1960. Professions: Photographer Forms: Photography, Photograph Diane Arbus was an American photographer. Arbus worked to normalize marginalized groups and highlight the importance of proper representation of all people.

Composition:
The picture shows a clear bright tone across the left side of the image which has been created by a studio light and has added interest to the image, as it picks out the models features. There is a highlight on the nose and forehead and the white of the hair curlers makes them stand out against the dark of the hair. I can see that the Rule of thirds has been used to improve the composition of the image, the top of the face is higher above in the top half of the image, with the person’s eyebrows on the sweet spot which draws the viewers eyes to this focal point. The hand holding the cigarette is located around the sweet spot in the bottom right of the composition grid which draws your attention to it. In my opinion, the photographer has definitely used a fast shutter speed to capture the reality of the image and make it very clear to the eye. The F-stop could have been around 14 and possibly a 50mm lens used. The image has been shot indoors so it was probably taken as a studio shot so that the photo can be set-up carefully. Photoshop may have been used to fix up minor details such as black and white and using the healing device to get rid of the smoke. The main compositional technique used is the contrast between the black of the top, eyebrows and hair against a monochrome background. This helps the white of the fingernails, hair rollers and face highlights standout and adds interest to the photograph.
Connection:
This image links with our portrait project because it involves taking a picture of a person's face and adding your own effects and edits to make it look unique. This automatically makes it more captivating for the audience which is why I like Diane's type of work. It requires you to understand an already perfect picture by using photoshop to make the picture more breath taking and majestic. I will use similar monochrome in my work, including more black and white and also the use of lighting for certain areas of the photo. However, I will also use lighter tone colours so that my work could have a contrast of dark to light colours which will give me a variety of different outcomes. I also will try similar photoshop techniques by showing the face and the shoulders by tightly cropping the image. In my opinion I really adore Diane work as it is something that I am into and intrigued by. I really like how she uses very dramatic, spooky features in her pieces of work, such as dark colours and distinctive photoshop skills to inarguably add personality into her work.
Comment:
I personally don't mind Diane Arbus's work however I would prefer not to use it too often as I go for a more interesting and modern look in my photos and Diane Arbus did quite old photos even before her era. She does make quite disturbing portraits but this does compel her audience. I like how she shows people from different sides of society. Overall her work does inspire me for maybe the future if I ever want to make these types of photos.

My full Shoot Plan
As I am beginning this project with the inspiration of Robert Frank who is known for including photoshop to make his images appear unique. I really admire how his work is portrayed as weird but attractive to his audience in order to keep his onlookers intrigued and interested. I am going to add this into my work by using close up shots of the face from the head to the shoulders, then experiment with photoshop, and maybe add different colours such as black and white.
The equipment I will be using is a Canon DSLR camera which may be put onto a tripod so I can get a series of images in the same exact location. I will use a fast shutter speed so I can capture the model's features better. I will use a background of white using an infinity curve so the background will be smooth and easier to photoshop over. I may need a single studio light so the light can shine onto the models face so they are visible. The camera setting will be changed throughout so it can fit with the theme of the image taken. The white balance may be on 100 or auto depending on the location of the photo. I will use a golden reflector to display a warmer undertone on the model's face. I will also use photoshop so I am able to achieve the final product. I need to make sure my camera is charged and that I delete photos after uploading them so more space is available on my camera.

Shoot Plan With Justin
I am starting my projects by taking inspiration from these 3 images because I believe that these images have great lighting techniques and this is something which I would also like to achieve. I am going to take pictures of people like this in the studio to get the best results that I can. Then I would like to take the photos I've taken and edit them in photoshop to enhance them for the best outcome.
The equipment I will be using will be a DSLR Canon camera which will be put onto a tripod to get the best professional image. I will also try to use studio lights to make the image more brilliant, unique and professional. I will use a background of either black or white because it will give me a more moody and more serious look which is my goal in this shoot. My camera setting will be changed throughout so I don't miss out on the opportunity to get the best image. The white balance will be on auto or it might change due to the circumstance. My ISO would be on auto and wouldn't change since it's taken in a studio setting. I am aiming to take 15-20 photos of each person in different poses because I believe that any less than that would be unprofessional and any more than that would be too untidy. I will take photos of my friends and maybe more who would want to. The people that I will be taking photos of wouldn't wear something too extreme, I am trying to make them wear something basic and I would like them to have nothing on their face, just their natural self.

Camera set up
My First Professional Shoot
Best and Worst
The photo on the left isn't that admirable because the lighting is wrong. On the other hand the photo on the right is admirable because the lighting is perfect.
My best and worst
The left photograph is not measured well. You can tell this by the ears not together. The image on the right is well measured because the hand goes around the neck.
Best and worst
The Image on the left is not bright enough on the left side of his face. The photo on the right is bright enough on the face.
Best and Worst
For these Images I didn't really like them because they didn't have any sort of lighting or shadow. I didn't position my camera in the right way therefore my photos haven't come out in the best possible quality.
My Best and Worst
The left photo is not measured properly as the right image is measured perfectly you can see this because the ears are matching. The right photo shows us how I got used to measuring the double exposure method.
My professional shoot with Justin
Neon light effect
I am going to manipulate this photograph in photoshop using the neon effect

I really like this tutorial and idea because it's unique and not many people have done this. It also looks amazing and bright. I also quite like the way of exploring light which I can do both through the camera lens and post production.

My Final Images
My Double exposure
Tutorial :

I have chosen this tutorial because I really liked the way he has chosen to change his background and the photo looks fantastic because of the way the tree was blending with my model.

My final Image
Sliced head tutorial
|
I researched Magdiel Lopez as one off my photographers and I looked up to him as an inspiration as his photoshops ideas are amazing and very very unique, no other photographer has done a idea like this or anything even similar, hence the reason why I picked his photoshop, I followed the tutorial step by step and edited it.

Dispersion Effect
Dispersion Effect tutorial:
I did this tutorial because I wanted to do an outcome with a special meaning behind it and have a good effect when people look at it. My photoshops didn't really have any meaning so I made this one have a meaning with depression and someone fading away. This really stands out because the stuff coming out of the image is really satisfying.

Final gallery
For my final gallery I will start with sliced photos and go into further detail. I am going to start with the head splitting but move the nose to the right hand side of the face and add a lot of information and make it personal. This would make my first final image a highly developed photograph. I will have at the end of my final gallery about 4-5 photographs to a really high standard to achieve a better grade. I will start by watching tutorials and doing step by step. My final ideas for my gallery would be to edit photographs and make them to the same level as Magdiel Lopez which would be hard but I will push.
Evaluation
Although I did not like the theme, I can see that I was able to photograph different things. I did prefer the texture project but on the other hand this project allowed me to be creative. This also made me improve my knowledge and my skills. In photography I found the use of photoshop very useful. I really enjoyed taking photos because we set up shooting locations for example the Justin shoot. This shoot made me explore the manual setting and how to take photos that are double exposure at a time. I used YouTube tutorials which made my outcomes come to a whole entire different level. I have learnt how to copy and paste layers and use the blur tool in photoshop. For my next project I would like to learn more about photoshop and I can get used to it a lot more. I also really enjoyed the professional shoot because I learnt a lot from it. For example, the three photographers I used were Magdiel Lopez, Diane Arbus and Steve McCurry. For my professional shoot I zoomed in on Diane Arbus for example the black and white images. When I was doing my photoshop I was watching YouTube tutorials to make my outcomes look similar to Magdiel Lopez. When I did research on Magdiel Lopez it was linked because her edits are also colourful and bright. Most of the photographers nowadays are taking everything in colour which is great because colour is so interesting and is very meaningful and powerful but they've almost forgotten about the classical black and white. Which personally I love so much because it looks so stylish and almost 'expensive' which to me is so divine because then it looks appealing. I linked my images to theirs by shadowing their black and white techniques such as patterns and shadows. This means that my work should also be linked to the famous photographers I have researched about. The most successful part of my project was the professional shoot with Justin. My most successful part of the project was the images I took with Justin because it was very professional and the images that I took with him came out great and had amazing quality which makes my website look more professional than it did. It was also a great experience because I learned how to instruct the model that I was using and now the next time I take pictures I know how to direct them. I also think that my final shoot with photoshop was successful because a lot of great outcomes came out and I am pretty proud of it because most of the images were successful. I also used more websites such as coggle to plan a shoot which was extremely helpful. The pandemic has caused some delays but I've still been able to complete the shoot although it was meant to be done months ago. Lockdown really made everything slower but one thing I came out with is me being confident from working from home which makes me extremely independent. I learnt from watching the tutorials and from my peers which was extremely helpful because some of the techniques are hard to follow. All of this was a great experience because I am now able to do a lot of things by myself which makes it professional.
